Note:
Annual anthology of American short stories, from 1915, as two ISFDB series:
•
Best Short Stories (Edward J. O'Brien)
• The Best American Short Stories, published by Houghton Mifflin
Wikipedia covers the series as one, 1915 to present.
O'Brien covered 1914 American short stories in 1915 magazine articles and found a book publisher for the 1915 short story year. He edited the annual anthology, with multiple publishers, until his death in 1941.
Martha Foley edited the series until her death in 1977. Some time under Foley the annual volume became
The Best American Short Stories 19xx published by Houghton Mifflin (no later than 1944,
LCCN 2020775696).
From 1978 the annual editor is a one-year guest, under a series editor since
Shannon Ravenel, 1979 to 1990.
The title year matches the stated publication year since sometime before Houghton Mifflin, and under the original title. As
The Best American Short Stories 1956 published 1956, for instance, the contents are short stories first published in 1955.
