Synopsis: From the flaps of the Crowell first edition: "..., the story is set a thousand years in the future. Society is run by computers, with not a gesture or activity unnoticed by their all-seeing detectors. In this strange new world live the last Enlib (Environmental Liberal) and the last Comcap (Communist Capitalist); billboards proclaim OLD IS SEXY, RUN FASTER, and TRUST MACHINES; spacescrapers - three miles high, 1,000 stories, 1,000 people per floor - house 1,000,000 people; audiences are enthralled by the Sex Olympics in which "fusbing" is professionalized in such events as the fastfusb, aerial walkover, the marathon, the dangerous vaulting fusb, and the flying hip circle, among many others. The divorce rate having climbed to 100 percent, the computers have made marriage almost illegal but adultery compulsory, with a resultant zero divorce rate. People have been homogenized to the point that they look alike. "Real victuals" are hard to come by but humans live by synthesizing sunlight. In this setting, Bil and Alice meet, marry, and, their sense of history whetted by a few old books and photos, decide to rebel. They set out to find the central computer bank and pull the plug. Captured and imprisoned on a Floating Island (where the computers put criminals to get their just desserts), Bil and Alice escape. Terrified by rocops and computers, Bil and Alice succeed in their rebellion - only to be amazed by what they discover. Their odyssey is ... with an ingenious depiction of man vs. machine."
