Note: This novel was published in two parts under the titles Scarlet Denial in Science Fiction Adventures No. 26, the first part, and Scarlet Dawn in Science Fiction Adventures No. 28, the second part. Science Fiction Adventures did not print stories serially, but did print then with issues in between. There is not one word added or deleted in the Ace printing. The only changes are the novel title and the second part has the chapters numbered to the novel not the story. This is therefore not a fix-up in any sense of the word as is stated in the Wikipedia. Synopsis: Shipwrecker's boy finds he has a lost legacy in the Galactic Guards and accidentally teams with an alien who spreads itself throughout his body and lives in a 'talking' partnership with his host. The title comes from the alien's quest for its mate and incidentally the boy's genetic human match also.
