Note: According to Paul Williams' story notes in Thunder and Roses (1997), this story was written early in 1946. It was substantially rewritten in early 1948 (after its publication in Astounding) for inclusion in Sturgeon's first collection Without Sorcery (1948). All versions from that point forward are of the revised version.
