Title: Mr. Fox Title Record # 2511092
Author: Joseph Jacobs
Date: 1890-09-00
Type: SHORTFICTION
Length: short story
Language: English
Note: SOURCE: Contributed by Blakeway to Malone's Variorum Shakespeare (1790), to illustrate Benedick's remark in Much Ado About Nothing (I, i, 146): 'Like the old tale, my Lord, "It is not so, nor t'was not so, but, indeed, God forbid it should be so" '; which clearly refers to the tale of Mr Fox. 'The Forbidden Chamber' has been studied by Mr Hartland, Folk-Lore Journal, iii, 193 seq. 'Be bold' is Britomart's motto in the Faƫrie Queene, and one may also refer to 'Bloody Jack' (Ingoldsby Legends).

21/-?Prior to decimilisation (1968-1971), UK books were priced in shillings, or shillings and pence, where 20 shillings equals one pound and 12 old pence equals one shilling. Shillings were indicated with a variety of suffixes, e.g. 3s, 3', 3", 3/ all mean 3 shillings. Any number after that is additional pence, usually 6 (half a shilling) but sometimes 3 or 9 (a quarter of a shilling or three-quarters of a shilling).
