Title: The House of Defence Title Record # 19565
Author: E. F. Benson
Date: 1906-09-00
Type: NOVEL
Webpages: archive.org
Language: English
Note: Published in US newspapers as a serial beginning Sunday 1906-09-02 (according to ANA plan, in the lead newspapers of all important cities). Promotion in the Louisville Courier-Journal one week earlier comprises at least four short news stories such as this one (quote -08-26 p. C2):
"Magic" Mirror Amazes Villagers. Although the days of superstition are past, yet at least two sane people at Port Washington declare they possess a "magic mirror." ... [This novel] will begin exclusive serial publication in this paper (prior to its appearance in book form), on Sunday, September 2. "The House of Defence" is fifth of the famous $150,000 series issued by the Authors and Newspapers' Association.
During the week, The Nashville American is cluttered with straight advertisements (5 Installments Complete This Great Novel), similar news blurbs as quoted above, and moderately long fake news stories (Wednesday, "London Scandal: Leader of the Smart Set in That City is the Central Figure"; Saturday with London dateline Friday, "Miraculous Methods: Young American Stops Typhoid Scourge Simply by Talking").
Synopsis: "The House of Defence is of especial interest in that it is written in defense of Christian Science and is the first popular novel openly advocating the doctrines of Mrs. Eddy." --The Church School Journal, Vol 39 (1907), p. 104, on the early volumes of the ANA series "All of the followers of Mrs. Eddy will adore this book for it is full of the practices and cures of Christian Science; ... Some persons who read this book will believe that Eugene Benson has perpetrated one of the most brilliant satires of recent years." --Louisville Courier-Journal, 1906-10-06 p. 5, first and last lines of brief review See also the titles of faux news stories, above.
