Title: Wuthering Heights Title Record # 1622405
Author: Emily Brontë
Date: 1847-12-00
Type: NOVEL
Webpages: Wikipedia-EN
Language: English
Note: This dark romance has fantastic elements that could be supernatural or psychological, centered around the enigmatic character known only as Heathcliff. (Fantasy: The 100 Best Books, by James Cawthorne and Michael Moorcock, may be the source for this observation, from a brief publication record of the 1st ed., deleted February 2020. Cawthorn and Moorcock may also report the precise publication date 1847-12-01.) The technique of nested narrative (a story within a story within a story), which distances reality and puts the reader into a mazelike narrative, reinforces the book's Gothicism. Tzvetan Todorov, in his book translated into English as "The Fantastic" (1973), defines the fantastic as the moment the reader must choose whether a story is reality or fantasy. Brontë's novel fits this definition. The novel was written between October 1845 and June 1846, and published in 1847 under the author's pseudonym "Ellis Bell". The first US edition was published in 1848 as "by the author of Jane Eyre" --in error. See the 1848 Variant Title for more information.

1847 Wuthering Heights [as by Ellis Bell]
1848 The elder sister of Emily Brontë, Charlotte Brontë was the true author of Jane Eyre, whose 1st ed. had been published in London as "edited by Currer Bell" (16 October 1847 per Wikipedia). Wuthering Heights had been published in London as "by Ellis Bell" (December probably). Each novel was published in the US a few months later by Harper, the latter certainly as "by the author of Jane Eyre". The May 1848 report quoted below apparently concerns the situation in the United States, except for its mention of "four shillings". "Wuthering Heights has created a sensation from having become the subject of a controversy. The magic words upon its cover, "by the author of Jane Eyre", induced hundreds to invest four shillings[!] in its purchase, with the greatest alacrity. The book, however, turns out so different in character and interest from its predecessor, that the critics have thrown a doubt upon its parentage. We believe, however, they are wrong in attributing any conscious deception to its publishers. The fact seems to be that it was written or edited by a relative of the author of Jane Eyre, of the same name and family. It is so stated in the English papers, and the mistake is thus very naturally accounted for." --The Home Journal (New York) 1848-05-20 p. 2, "Interesting New Works" (typography modified)
