Title: A Collection of Novels and Tales of the Fairies Title Record # 2300943
Editor: Comtesse d'Aulnoy
Date: 1721-00-00
Type: ANTHOLOGY
Language: English
Note: At least through the 3rd edition (1737), this book was published as if all of the stories were by Madame d'Aulnoy, and no other attributions were given. It is unclear to us at what point the true authorship of some of the fairy tales was given, or discovered. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, we give the actual authors for all stories, for even the earliest printings. From the Princeton Library record: (The term "replaces" refers to the French edition. (Vol. 3 was first included in the 2nd edition) Mme d'Aulnoy's fairy tales are framed in novels, the first, The History of Don Gabriel, contains The Royal Ram, Story of Finetta the Cinder Girl, and The Palace of Revenge (by Mme Murat, which replaces Fortunée). There follows The Story of Anguilletta, also by Mme de Murat, which replaces Babiolle. The next two tales are framed by The History of Don Ferdinand of Toledo: The Yellow Dwarf, The Story of Young-and Handsome (by Mme de Murat, replacing Serpentin vert); the remaining tales are framed by The History of the New Gentleman-Citizen: The Story of the White Cat, The Story of Fortunio, The Story of the Pidgeon and the Dove, The Story of the Princess Fair-Star, and Prince Chery, The Story of the Princess Carpillona and Perfect Love (the last de Murat tale, replacing d'Aulnoy's Le Dauphin). Volume III contains twelve tales written by Mme d'Auneuil as well as the anonymous Florina or the fair Italian. The frame story The Knights Errant is itself a fairy tale and contains: Princess Zamea and the Prince Almazon; Prince Elmedorus and the Princess Alzayda, Princess Zalmayda and the Prince of Numidia; Prince of Numidia; Prince Zalmandor and Princess Almandina; Magnificent Fairy and Prince Salmacis; Fairy of Pleasures and the Cruel Amerdin.
