Note: This introduction spans pp 1-7 in the examined first printing, under the headings "Preface by Anne McCaffrey" and "Anne McCaffrey's Pern". The former (p1-2) is entirely in nonfiction voice and concerns derivative Pern fiction, the authority McCaffrey reserved re the Crossroads project, and her ultimate pleasure with the result. Evidently it may be considered a preface to both Pern volumes in the Crossroads series, Dragonharper and Dragonfire. The second part of this introduction (p3-7) is synopsis in fiction voice, as is all of the shorter 1988 Introduction (Dragonfire) by McCaffrey.
