Synopsis: From the dust jacket blurb of the 1976 Dempsey & Squires edition:
A Long Trip to Teatime is a sort of through-the-looking-glass tale in which Edgar vanishes through the inkwell in his school desk, and from learning about the Anglo-Saxon kings of England, comes to meet them in person.
This is after negotiating such matters as free will, predestination and the expanding universe, not to mention the Blatant Beast and his mother, and having the theory of relativity explained by a mouse called Alfred.
For Edgar, it is indeed a long voyage back to the classroom in time for tea and cherry cake, though the mysterious city of Edenborough can itself hospitably provide delicacies such as huibrechts filled with hot waynflete jam, pungently sweet, and euphalian potatoes.
