Synopsis: Publisher: This is a story of the struggle between the new and the old in Sarnia, which is the Island of Guernsey, all that remains of Duke William's Duchy of Normandy. Aymon de Vauxlaurens is allied to the ancient aristocracy of the island as well as to its bourgeoisie. Through the eccentricity of an old man valuable papers are lost. To help him in discovering them, Aymon resorts to magic, or what seems to be magic, whose spirit lurks watchfully beneath the surface of the modern business center in which the story is laid. He is brought into conflict with family tradition and lives through the weirdest of events -- experiences which are shared by Yvonne, the pretty dancer, and by Oriane, the white witch-maiden. Strange influences shape his stranger destiny.
