Note: New York 1917 to 1928 (name change) or 1933 Succeeded 1928 by Horace Liveright The publisher Boni & Liveright changed their name to Horace Liveright in 1928, and it remained under that name until 1931, when Liveright, Inc. was formed. It bankrupted in 1933 and was reorganized as Liveright Publishing. Please keep publications separate. DO NOT MERGE these publishers. Albert Boni (1892–1981) and Horace Brisbin Liveright (1884–1933) founded Modern Library ("The Modern Library of the World's Best Books") and Boni & Liveright in 1917. "Modern Library was formed as a reprinting line, publishing inexpensive books from European modernists, while Boni & Liveright published the work of contemporary Americans."
