Note: The third Tom Swift series The first two series, published from 1910 to 1971, had been issued in hardcover by Grosset & Dunlap. The Stratemeyer Syndicate had moved to publisher Simon & Schuster in the late 1970s, and this series was published in hardcover and paperback formats by the S&S imprint Wanderer Books. The primary setting is outer space. Although Tom is son of "the great Tom Swift", it is not explained here whether he is grandson of the original and son of Tom Swift Jr., whose adventures were first published in 1910 and 1954, or whether the original is his father. (Wikipedia cites critic Francis Molson.) Later series made clear that Tom Swift Jr. remains the protagonist.
