  • Series: Amateur Science Stories Series Record # 37477
  • Webpages: efanzines.com, Fancyclopedia 3
  • Note: Notable for publishing some of Arthur C. Clarke's first stories: Travel by Wire! (his first published work), Retreat from Earth and How We Went to Mars (winner of a Retro Hugo). Source: Acknowledgments page in "The Best of Arthur C. Clarke, 1937-1955" (Sphere Books, 1973 reprinted 1975). Clarke's introduction and individual story credits incorrectly list the magazine as "Amateur Science Fiction Stories"; the source of this error is unknown. "Its objective was to publish worthwhile fiction by new writers, and it had a selection board to judge submissions. This was comprised of Douglas Mayer (the editor), Edward Carnell, Maurice Hanson, Harold Warnes, Dr. W. A. Gibson and Festus Pragnell... The editor claimed that AMATEUR SCIENCE STORIES was discontinued because there was not enough material of a high standard to fill it; and in truth the fiction had indeed been well above the usual fannish quality." (THEN: A History of UK Science Fiction Fandom) Published by: The Science Fiction Association, Leeds, England. Editor: Douglas W. F. Mayer Years of Publication: 1937 - 1938 Issues: 3 Publication Details: All issues were American legal, 8 1/2" X 14", edge-stapled, mimeographed in purple ink. Awards: "How We Went to Mars", in issue #3, won a 1938 Retro Hugo award for best short story. (Awarded in 2014.) Missing Data: Covers to issues #1 and #3.
