  • Webpages: public.iastate.edu, SFE
  • Note: A series of SF adventures for juvenile audiences. According to Professor Lorrie Pellack at Iowa State University of Science & Technology: "The "Miss Pickerell" series was begun by Ellen MacGregor, who died in 1954 [after writing the first 4 books in the series]. Following her death, McGraw-Hill searched unsuccessfully for someone to continue the series until 1964, when they selected Ms. [Dora] Pantell." According to John Clute's "MacGregor, Ellen" entry in SFE, Miss Pickerell's "interest in these adventures is always focused on their scientific implications, and she learns a great deal about the theory and mechanics of Space Flight [in book 1]. Following the author's early death, the series was continued after a gap of eleven years by Dora Pantell, who at least initially used MacGregor's story notes, and signed herself in collaboration with the elder writer until 1983." The more informative SFE3 entry "Pantell, Dora" is linked above. As per SFE3, the original cover artists for all 17 books were their interior illustrators Paul Galdone (4 books by MacGregor) and Charles Geer (13 books by Pantell).
