Note: Named after Kathleen Fidler, a prolific British author of juvenile books who died in 1980. According to http://www.bookawards.bizland.com/fidler_awards.htm , "members [of the Edinburgh Children's Book Group] ... together with her publishers, Blackie and Son Limited, and Mary Baxter, then Chief Executive of the National Book League (Scotland), established The Kathleen Fidler Award as a memorial to her deep interest in children and writers. In 1996, Hodder Children's Books took over the sponsorship of the award and the name was changed to The Fidler Award." The change in sponsorship and the gap in the award years in the late 1980s and early 1990s is presumably related to the fact that the original sponsor, Blackie and Son Limited, went out of business in 1991.
Ten awards were given between 1983 and 2001, at which point the award was discontinued. Note that the award date typically predated first publication date because the award was given prior to publication. Theresa Breslin's "Whispers in the Graveyard" won the award in 1987, but wasn't published at the time and appeared in 1994.
