Note: Born as Marise Liliane Appoline Boucolon, she married the actor Mamadou Condé in 1958. She studied at the Sorbonne, Paris, France, and worked after that as a teacher at various African schools and language institutes, before returning in 1973 to France. She was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2015 (for her body of work) and in 2023 for her novel "The Gospel According to the New World" (in French originally published as "L'évangile du Nouveau Monde").
